Astrid Meadows

Astrid Meadows is one of those increasingly rare breeds in Singapore’s urban fabric, a mid-rise condominium surrounded by greeneries, with plenty of space to breathe.

With its spacious units and flexible structural design allowing for internal reconfigurations, it presents an ideal canvas for architectural intervention.

This project holds particular significance as it was once our family's vacation home during my childhood years in Indonesia. When my parents approached me to renovate their unit—untouched since 1990—what began as a minor repair project evolved into a complete spatial reinvention.

The combined dining and family area would be encapsulated in oak wood, with wooden panels cladding the walls and timber rafters running across the ceiling. The living room would be sunken down, demarcating the space without disrupting the flow of movement.

The renovation's centerpiece is an open-plan living area that maximizes natural light and ventilation. By removing partition walls and redistributing the study spaces to individual bedrooms, we created a flowing social space that better suits contemporary living patterns.

The kitchen was reimagined as two distinct spaces: a wet kitchen for serious cooking and a dry kitchen with counter seating that serves as a casual breakfast nook—now the family's favorite spot in the home.

The design seamlessly blends contemporary aesthetics with nostalgic elements from our Indonesian heritage, particularly evident in the dining area. A custom dining table shaped out of natural teak wood stood in the middle of the room. Vintage dining chairs made of Brazilian Rosewood perfectly complement the unique design of the table.

Throughout the home, natural materials and earthy tones create a serene atmosphere, while neutral spaces serve as perfect backdrops for carefully curated furniture pieces.

The renovation successfully creates a subtle hierarchy between public and private spaces through thoughtful spatial planning and material selection. While thoroughly modern, the design maintains a sense of warmth and tranquility that makes it truly feel like home.

More than anything, the goal was to design a place that would continue to bring us joy and fond memories to share for many more years to come.
